How to Rack Up a Better Score on Toy Story Mania!

Each game on Toy Story Mania! has hidden high-value targets and bonus sequences that can seriously boost your score if you know where to aim. Working with your ride partner and focusing on specific triggers, like the volcano eruption or the secret robot stage, makes a real difference in your final score.

If you've ridden Toy Story Mania! at Disney California Adventure, Disney's Hollywood Studios, or Tokyo DisneySea, you know the appeal: you're sitting in a spinning carnival car with a spring-action shooter, competing for the highest score across a series of carnival-style games. It's surprisingly competitive, and there's definitely strategy involved beyond just pointing and shooting.

The good news is that each game has tricks worth knowing about, and a little preparation can make a real difference when you're trying to beat your friends' scores on your next visit.

Getting Started: The Practice Round

You'll go through a practice round before the scoring games begin, where Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and Rex hold up targets while you launch pies at them. This round doesn't count toward your score, so you can use it to get a feel for how your shooter works and how the vehicle moves, or you can save your energy. There's no penalty either way.

One thing worth noting: Rex gives hints during each game, so listen for his tips as you go through the booth. He's genuinely helpful.

Game One: Hamm & Eggs

This barnyard-themed game has you throwing hard-boiled eggs at targets, some moving on conveyor belts and some stationary. Pop-up targets can appear with higher point values.

The key here is watching for Buttercup's cue to aim at the fox in the henhouse door. Hitting that target releases a rush of high-value chickens. It's worth returning to that target whenever you can, since it gives you consistent scoring opportunities.

Game Two: Rex & Trixie's Dino Darts

You're launching darts at balloons alongside dino eggs, lava bubbles, and palm leaves. Darts bounce off balloons and create chain reactions, so focusing on clusters of targets helps you maximize ricochet opportunities.

Watch for the three vertical balloons at the base of the volcano. Pop all three when they appear, and you'll trigger a full eruption that sends 500-point balloons into the air. After the eruption, two meteors appear in the corners of the screen. If you and your ride partner time it right and hit both meteors repeatedly, you'll trigger a meteor shower with bonus balloons, which is one of the highest scoring opportunities in the game.

Game Three: Green Army Men Shoot Camp

Sarge gives you permission to break plates by shooting baseballs at moving targets. Plates are constantly in motion, pulled across by remote-control helicopters, tanks, and airplanes.

Look for the gold, 1,000-point plates on each side of the booth. Hitting them triggers a cannon animation and boosts your score. The real prize, though, is the two 2,000-point plates being thrown into the air on both sides of the mountain. If both you and your ride partner hit them during the same toss, a tank appears with even higher-scoring plates.

Game Four: Buzz Lightyear's Flying Tossers

This space-themed booth has you tossing rings at flying saucers, rocket ships, and Aliens. The Aliens on flying saucers beyond the center rocket ship are worth 5,000 points each, so prioritizing those is a smart move.

For a real scoring boost, work with your ride partner to land rings on all the Aliens on the rocket ship in the center. If you both succeed, you'll unlock a secret stage where a giant robot appears. Keep aiming for the robot's mouth, and the point value keeps increasing each time it opens.

Game Five: Woody's Rootin' Tootin' Shootin' Gallery and Bonus Round

The final game sends suction-cup darts at cacti, fences, and trees in a western setting inspired by Woody's Roundup from Toy Story 2. Each hit adds points and triggers animated reactions.

If you and your ride partner hit all the targets in the gallery at least once before the vehicle moves, all targets pop open at once, giving you another scoring opportunity.

Once the vehicle advances, you move into a gold mine-themed bonus round with mine carts racing across the screen at increasing point values. Watch for bats at the top of the screen as an additional target. When the mine carts clear, a large bonus target appears with rapidly climbing point values. This is your final chance to rack up points, so keep firing as much as you can.

One practical tip: if your arm is getting tired during the bonus round, switch to your other arm. You'll perform better if you're not exhausted.

What You'll Win

After the final game, your total score determines which virtual plush toy you've earned. Scores range from a Turtle at 0 points all the way up to a Bear at 300,000 points, with various animals in between. It's a nice way to see how you stacked up.

The games reward both individual skill and teamwork with your ride partner. Knowing where the high-value targets are and what triggers bonus sequences definitely helps, but it takes practice to nail the timing.
