We're Finally Getting That Buzz Lightyear Glow-Up and It's About Time

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom finally got the refresh it deserved with new blasters that actually work and a cute robot named Buddy. The new target system with white and multicolor rings means you've got fresh strategies to chase that Galactic Hero title. Whether you're sniping distant targets or racking up variety bonuses, it's actually competitive now.

Okay, so we've been riding the same Buzz Lightyear ride since 1998, right? And don't get me wrong, I love a good nostalgia trip, but it was definitely time for a refresh. Well, Disney finally listened and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom just got a massive upgrade. We're talking new blasters, new targets, and a cute little robot friend named Buddy who we're already obsessed with.

It's the same ride you remember, but everything feels snappier now. The vehicles got a facelift with these sleek new Star Command colors and actual screens that show your score in real time. No more guessing if you're actually hitting anything.

But the real star is Buddy. He's this adorable support bot that Pixar and Imagineering created together, and he hangs out in a brand new scene at the start to help you warm up. Think of him as your personal trainer before the main event. It's a nice touch, especially if you're riding with kids who need a minute to figure out the blasters.

Speaking of blasters, they actually work now. Like, really work. The new handheld ones have always-on lasers so you can see exactly where you're aiming, plus they vibrate and light up when you hit something. Each vehicle has two different colored blasters, red and green, and when you nail the center of a target, you'll see your color flash back at you. It's weirdly satisfying.

How to Actually Get Galactic Hero Now

Let's talk strategy because Galactic Hero status just got more complicated, in a good way. The targets themselves are smarter now. Sometimes you'll see a white ring around one, and that means it's worth double points. But if you spot a multicolor ring? That's the jackpot. It's rare, it moves around, and if you hit it, you trigger this crazy bonus mode where every target in the room is worth way more for like ten seconds.

Here's the other big change: distance matters more than ever. Those far away targets that are hard to hit? They're worth more points now. And at the very end, you get a bonus based on how many different targets you hit throughout the ride. So you can't just spam the same secret target over and over and expect to max out. Well, you can, but you'll miss out on that end bonus.

Yeah, the old secret targets are still there, but they're worth less than they used to be. The tradeoff is they're easier to hit with the new blasters. So veteran players can still use that knowledge, but now there are new secret spots to find too.

The whole thing feels more like Toy Story Mania! now, where you're actually competing instead of just waving a blaster around hoping for the best. Whether you want to play precision sniper going for those distant high-value shots or you just want to spray and pray to rack up that variety bonus at the end, there's finally a real path to Galactic Hero that isn't just memorize the robot's left hand in the first room.

We're already planning my next trip back to Tomorrowland to try to hit that multicolor ring again. To infinity and beyond, right? Let us know how you fare when you get a chance to take a ride on it!
