Spaceship Earth is Getting a Major Refresh
Spaceship Earth at EPCOT is heading for its first significant update in nearly 20 years. Disney announced the news at D23, with Imagineer Ali Rubinstein and YouTuber Mark Rober discussing the reimagining of the iconic geodesic sphere alongside Neil Patrick Harris.
The attraction, which opened with EPCOT in 1982, has been a park staple for over four decades. It's undergone narration changes over the years (most recently with a script update in 1994), but this new update will be more substantial than a simple refresh of the storyline.
What's Changing
Rather than scrapping what works, Disney's redesign will expand the attraction's focus. Right now, the ride tells the history of human communication, from cave paintings through the digital age. The reimagined version will broaden that lens to center on human connection instead, keeping the same EPCOT DNA that's made the attraction resonate with guests for so long.
That means you'll still be spiraling up through that massive 180-foot sphere in continuously moving vehicles (the ride system is genuinely one of the most complex Disney's ever built), but the scenes and story you experience will reflect a wider view of how people connect and relate to each other across time.
Why This Matters
Spaceship Earth has always been the philosophical heart of EPCOT, celebrating human ingenuity and progress. Shifting the focus from just communication to the broader idea of connection feels like a natural evolution. It's more reflective of what EPCOT has become over the years, and it gives the Imagineers room to tell stories that feel relevant right now while keeping the attraction's core appeal intact.
There's no timeline for when this update will arrive, but it's coming. For now, you've got plenty of time to enjoy the current version before the reimagined Spaceship Earth opens its doors.
